Martinez Named Prosecutor Of The Year

Third Judicial District Attorney Susana Martinez was named Prosecutor of the Year this week by a peer group within the state bar association.

The annual award was announced at a spring meeting of the Prosecutors Section of the State Bar of New Mexico, held in Ruidoso.

A committee selected Martinez from among this year’s pool of nominees.

Martinez was first elected district attorney in Doña Ana County in 1996 and has been re-elected [three times]. She’s currently seeking the Republican Party’s gubernatorial nomination.

To be eligible for the prosecutor award, a nominee must have at least five years of full-time prosecuting experience, according to the State Bar of New Mexico’s Web site. The experience doesn’t necessarily have to be in the district attorney role.

Qualities evaluated include the “individual’s outstanding characteristics, prosecution history, work with the public and contributions to the quality of prosecution and the image of prosecutors,” according to the site. …

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: In 2007, Martinez was named “Woman of the Year” by Heart Magazine for her efforts advocating Katie’s Law.  The law requires criminals to submit DNA samples, so they can be compared against evidence in unsolved rape and murder cases. The law is named after Katie Sepich, whose killer Martinez successfully prosecuted.
